The Montefiore Ombudsman

(Submitted by Greg Solomon.)

Dear Gloria and family,

Kurt excelled as an ombudsman physician at Montefiore Medical Center, training those of who were lucky enough to learn from him that there was so much more to a patient's experience than a list of symptoms to pursue and series of tests to perform. He was compassionate, patient and dedicated to understanding patients' stories, essential elements to being a truly great physician. I will miss him as a colleague, confidant and mentor.

Dear Dr. Kurt

(Submitted by the Harnik family.)

Dr. Kurt.

No better friend, doctor, husband, father and great-grandfather. There was no hour too early, too late or too inconvenient to help troubled fellow souls. His friendships started from his scout-years in Vienna and continued to the last days of his long life. As Vertrauensarzt for the Austrian community he was the dear doctor for countless, grateful Foreign Service employees and emigrees. He won't be forgotten.

Oh, so many thoughts about Kurt........his Viennese elegance; his clear sense of his own values and his own place in the world; his warmth; his devotion to his patients, his pride in Gloria and his children. I send you my sympathy and my love.

A memory

(Submitted by Kitty Benedict.)

Dear Gloria, Peter, Joan and Margaret- The last time I saw Kurt was at Edith's when I made one of my quick visits to NYC and the East Coast. But I remember all the times my mother would go over to Hillsdale or Kurt and Gloria would come to Albany. Please accept my sympathy and love on behalf of the Benedict family.

Collecting stamps

(Submitted by Peter Elias.)

Try as I might, I cannot remember when or why my father and I began collecting stamps. What I do remember is that he corresponded regularly with friends in England, Holland, Vienna, Switzerland, and France, and that envelopes with colorful tamps were a regular event.

Christmas Eve will never be the same

(Submitted by Ellen Stein.)

My husband Dick and I met Kurt and Gloria, via our friendship with Hanni and Milton. We so enjoyed being with Kurt at Hanni's small dinner parties, where his warm greetings, great conversation, and heartfelt hugs, were memorable. He seemed to love sharing his Mount Sinai experiences, with Dick, who is on staff there. We both so enjoyed and looked forward to his company.

My life wth BB

(Submitted by Peter Lynn.)

In some 70 years, Kurti and I were never separated regardless of physical distance. In our small intimate group consisting of Peter Benedict, Lizzy, Susi, the Alkalays, Fred and Ilse Grunwald - he and I were known as BB whereby the first B stood for brother, the second B, however, I am sure he would not have wanted to be public to a vast unknown audience. Regardless of distance, our deep and intimate contact never wavered.
